Panaji: On India’s 75th Independence Day, 75 national flags will be unfurled and hoisted simultaneously outside the popular Caculo Mall in Panaji by a group of very special guests – the specially abled and underprivileged citizens of the state.

The event is being planned to commemorate 75 years of Independence under the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ recently announced by the honourable PrimeMinister. Caculo Group has collaborated with Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG) & other NGOs in an effort to put the spotlight on and celebrate the lives of citizens who often find themselves on the fringes of society.

Explained Shamik Caculo, Director of Caculo Mall, “On the historic 75th Independence Day of the country or Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav, we wanted a very special group of people to be the VIPs who will hoist 75 national flags. The efforts and achievements of many often go unrecognised. We wanted to change that. We reached out to DRAG, Rotary and other NGOs, and are extremely happy we are now working together to celebrate the achievements and lives of people on Independence Day.” He appealed to people to come and join the celebrations of the community at Caculo Mall and celebrate Independence Day together. “Caculo Mall is always at the forefront of CSR activities and looks forward to offering opportunities to the less privileged. It’s our way of giving back to society”, he said.

As part of the celebration, on 13, 14 and 15 August, the atrium at Caculo Mall will offer its space to allow disability groups to sell their products and wares. These include carpentry, painting on stone, crafts, embroidery and more.

Avelino de Sa, President of Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG) shared that a knowledge series is also planned on the sidelines. He said, “We plan to organise sessions on sign language, financial planning, rights of persons with disability and related subjects during the three day event between 13 and 15 August. We appreciate the efforts of the Caculo Group to support DRAG and encourage the disability community. DRAG has been working for the past two decades to raise awareness on inclusiveness of the disabled into society and we are pleased to see the support. There is more to be done for the community and we appeal to people to come forward and support us this Independence Day”.

This event on 15 August will see over 100 individuals from underprivileged sections of society including orphanages, elderly living facilities, disability groups and Hamara School come together for the event and celebrate our independence in a different way like never before.
