Panaji: Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane on Wednesday chaired a meeting of all the chairpersons and chief officers of municipal bodies in the state to deliberate on creating “green urban landscapes.”

Talking to reporters after the meeting in Panaji, Rane said that all chairpersons and councillors came together to pledge their commitment towards the Green Initiative and sustainability, with a shared vision of creating vital green lungs across urban spaces.

“As part of this mission, specific locations will be identified and transformed into urban forests, helping combat rising temperatures and improve overall air quality,” he said.

Referring to Sonsodo, the minister said that the dump has been selected for a major transformation using the Miyawaki technique, aiming to convert the area into a thriving green landscape.

“Additionally, vertical gardens will be developed to enhance urban greenery, with full support from the Urban Development and Forest Departments. The Forest Department, in coordination with the Urban Development Department, will closely monitor the implementation of these projects to ensure effectiveness and sustainability,” he added.

Rane said that municipal officials across regions expressed great enthusiasm for the concept, actively sharing their opinions and suggestions on how to take the initiative forward.

He said that the officials emphasised the need for regular monitoring and consistent efforts to maintain momentum.

“As a result, it has been agreed that periodic review meetings will be held to assess progress and steer the projects in the right direction, ensuring a lasting impact for generations to come,” he added.
