Mapusa: The Sessions Court of Mapusa has sentenced both accused persons involved to life imprisonment in the murder case of restaurant owner Vishwajeet Singh.
This case dates back to August 2018, when on 07/08/2018, the deceased lodged a complaint against one of his employees, Umesh Lamani, resident of Candolim, Goa, for stealing his Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle and not returning it. Upset over the complaint, the accused person, along with another accused, Daya Shankar Sahu, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, stabbed the deceased to death using a sharp knife and sword during the midnight hours in the parking area of the deceased’s apartment complex at Candolim.
The accused persons were arrested in Karnataka by then Calangute Police Inspector Jivba Dalvi. The case was thoroughly investigated, which included the recovery of the weapons of assault, identification of witnesses and evidence, and the seizure of valuable CCTV footage. Finally, a chargesheet was filed within the same year.
The bail applications of the accused persons were rejected multiple times during the trial. The court examined 42 witnesses and digital evidence.
After six years of trial and examination of all witnesses, CCTV footage, and scientific evidence, the Sessions Court announced life imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 50,000 for both accused persons for committing murder under section 302 of the IPC and 3 years imprisonment for offenses under section 5 read with 27 of the Arms Act.
The investigation team consisted of DySP Jivba Dalvi (then Police Inspector of Calangute Police Station), PSI Sitaram Malik, PSI Mahesh Naik, ASI Subhash Malvankar, and other staff.
The prosecution of the case was conducted by PP Anuradha Talaulikar, PP Jennifer Santamaria, and PP Roy D’Souza.
The judgment was pronounced by District Judge Sharmila Patil.
