Security apparatus at Colvale Prison to be handled by Police: CM

Panaji: In a major decision, Goa government on Tuesday decided to hand over the entire security apparatus of Central Jail at Colvale in North Goa to Police department.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday inspected the Prison premises at Colvale village and also interacted with the inmates. Sawant’s visited the facility at the backdrop of several cases of illegalities reported from this prison.

“We have decided to hand over the security management of the jail to police department,” Sawant said adding that in the past, the officer of civil services used to be appointed as Inspector General of Prison. “Now, we will have Superitendent of Police level officer being appointed as IG Prison,” he said.

The chief minister said that the entire control of the prison will be with the Superitendent of Police rank officer with Deputy Superintendent of Police and Police Inspector rank officers subordinating him at this facility.

Sawant said that the state government is aiming to have Administrative Reforms in the prison.

The chief minister said that during his visit to the prison, he met several inmates and understood their plight. He said that several skilling courses will be introduced in the prison.
