Panaji: Taking a cue from the expression of interest by the govt of India to incorporate cervical cancer vaccination in the national immunization schedule, the Rotary Club of Dona Paula and IMA Bicholim branch organized a kind anti-cervical cancer vaccination camp for girls aged 9 to 16 years residing at the MAATRUCHAAYA orphanage in Ponda taluka.
The vaccination camp was inaugurated by Dr. Shekhar Salkar president of the Indian Medical Association Bicholim branch and a cancer surgeon himself!
The team of doctors who were present and helped in vaccinating children were Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Dr. Medha Salkar, Dr. Gunjan Baijal, Rotarian Dr. Elaine Rodrigues, Dr. Poornima Usgaonkar and dr Madhuri Mavlankar and Rotarian Dr. Sajal Dhond
Rotary Club Dona Paula was represented by the president of Rotarian Mr Gaurav Pokhale who in his address said that the Rotary Club of Dona Paula can fund this program for needy children specially destitutes. The cost of two doses of this Vaccine cost around 3000 Rs per head. He was in praise for IMA Bicholim branch for supporting this cause. Also present for the session was secretary Rotarian Mr. Felipe Alvares, Rotarian, Dr elaine rodrigues medical chair of rotary club of Dona Paula, Rotarian Dr. sajal Dhond club service director, Rotarian Mrs. Ummeiah sheikh who sponsored today’s snack boxes for the kids and rotarian Adv. Sanjana Kakodkar club admin of rotary club of Dona Paula.
During the program Dr. Salkar spoke to the residents and staff of Matruchaaya and busted the myths around the cervical cancer vaccine.
