Panaji: The Global Romi Lipi Abhiyan (GRLA) strongly condemns the recent statement made by the Chief Minister of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant, suggesting that individuals who prefer the Roman script for Konkani lack the spirit of true Goemcarpon.
This statement is divisive and disregards the linguistic diversity and personal choices of the people of Goa. The script used to write Konkani is a matter of personal preference and practicality, not a test of one’s Goan identity or Goemcarpon.
The Chief Minister’s assertion demonstrates a lack of awareness about the rich 500-year history of Romi Konknni in Goa. Roman Script Konknni has played a significant role in promoting the language and literature, and it is an integral part of Goemcarpon.
The Roman script has been used by the minority community in its liturgy and daily life, while Devanagari was introduced later.
The Chief Minister’s arguments against teaching Romi Konknni in schools lack merit, and the GRLA has already addressed these points in its Panchannama.
We urge the Chief Minister to reconsider his stance and promote the Konkani language in all its forms. By allowing students to choose the script of their choice, as per the new Educational Policy, the Chief Minister can ensure inclusive policies.
The CM should learn from the Karnataka government’s approach, which allows teaching Konkani in three different scripts, despite it not being the official language.
Let us work together to preserve and promote Goa’s rich cultural heritage. Major political parties in Goa have shown their support for this issue, recognizing the injustice done to the minority community and Romi Konknni.
