Panaji: Revolutionary Goans hit out at Goa Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant over the deteriorating law and order situation and how the state and its machinery has clearly transferred to women the responsibility to protect themselves.
They have also demanded stringent measures to ensure women’s safety. Stricter implementation of laws is the key to women’s safety.
The Revolutionary Goans’ Women’s Wing Leader, Sunayana Gawde opines that the police department has to take strict steps to curb the increasing cases of crime in Goa. Such crimes, especially against women are on the rise with the spike in migrant population and hence the necessary steps need to be taken by the government.
“The State and its machinery has clearly transferred to women the responsibility to protect themselves and how they should take precautions or what they should do in an emergency situation. We are totally aghast by the comments passed by CM a few days earlier asking parents of two girls allegedly raped on Sunday to introspect why their children were on a beach late at night. There was a time when women felt safe and could move around freely. But today things seem to have changed for women who venture out for education, work, and entertainment or simply to travel,” pointed out Sunayana.
“Public spaces are turning extremely unsafe for women of all ages with predators lurking everywhere. There are a whole lot of issues like streetlights, public transport system, swift action that need to be addressed by the government. There is failure on the part of the State in taking all such measures to prevent crime against women,” she added.
According to the data provided by the National Crime Records Bureau, crimes against women are on the rise and despite several guarantees enshrined in the Constitution, gender equality has not been achieved. For instance we have seen the case in Goa, over the last ten days three rape cases have taken place. Sadly the maximum number of crime cases recorded in Goa is carried out by outsiders or rather these migrants.
Revolutionary Goan members demand the government to install CCTV surveillance cameras across Goa, stop illegal businesses of migrants, demolition of illegal slums on comunidade land, compulsory police verification of all migrants, strict police patrolling and cancellation of illegal voting cards of migrants.
“Our CM has failed miserably as a Home Minister. So many rape cases are occurring in our state but after the accused is arrested what is being done to prevent crimes of similar nature from being repeated. Why is the BJP Mahila Mandal quiet? First of all these MLA’s for their selfish motives and to secure their vote banks are providing food and shelter to these migrants. It is high time women safety should be included in the election manifestos so that women’s issues become electoral issues,” signed off Sunayana.
