Panaji: Parents will also be prosecuted along with their child in case the latter is found to be violating the traffic norms, a senior police official said on Monday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dharmesh Angle told reporters that the number of fatal accidents are on rise in the state, due to the reasons like drunken driving and over speeding.

He said that the Traffic police would be implementing the check on drunken driving at major points during the day and night.

Angle said that for this year, 133 fatal accidents are reported killing 143 people. In the recent case of accident, four persons were killed when their vehicle plunged in the River after falling off from Zuari Bridge.

He said that the number of fatalities have significantly increased compared to last year, due to which the stringent measures would be in place.

Angle said that in some cases, even the minors driving vehicles are found to be involved in overspeeding and drunken driving.

“Parent of the child would be called to the police station and would be prosecuted for traffic violations,” he said.

He said that the parents cannot shy away from the responsibility as it is their look out to ensure that their child do not drive or ride the vehicle.
