Panaji: With more than half of the posts for Deputy Superintendent of Police unfilled, and long list of Police Inspectors waiting for their promotions, several senior officers in Goa Police are multitasking even in the pandemic situation stressing their limits.
Sources in the department confirmed that as many as 27 posts out of 40 sanctioned for DySP are vacant for several years.
If the same situation continues, then the number of vacant posts will increase further with more officers in a queue to get their superannuation.
DySP is an important position in the department, who works as a supervisory authority to look after his sub ordinates. The post is an important link between SP level officer and PI.
What is worrisome is that some of the existing DySPs are holding as many as five charges, dividing their attention. They have to shuffle between offices as their physical presence is required in many places, due to which they are exhausted.
The department has put in extra efforts during the pandemic situation with additional duties being added to the list to tackle spread of COVID-19.
These vacancies for DySP posts exists at the backdrop of several Police Inspectors of 1992 and 1997 batch still waiting for their promotions even as State Home Department is unsure whether to fill the posts on 80-20 or 50-50 basis which includes departmental promotions and direct recruitments.
A retired police officer, on the condition of anonymity, said that the department should opt for promotion of PIs to the DySP rather than waiting for direct recruitments.
“If you recruit someone from outside the cadre, it will take at least 3 years for him to get trained and inducted. Till that time, the department cannot work with such a short list of DySPs. Also, there are many who will retire and go, thereafter, the entire system will crumble.”
