Opposition, ruling in a verbal spat over gang rape case

Panaji: Goa Legislative Assembly’s ongoing session saw verbal dual between ruling and opposition benches when NCP MLA Churchill Alemao claimed that one of the influential person was trying to protect accused involved in a gang rape on minors.

Raising Calling Attention Motion on the floor  of the House on Wednesday, Alemao pointed out to the case of gang rape on two minor girls on a beach in South Goa.

He said that an influential person was calling police trying to protect the accused. Alemao also congratulated Police for arresting all the four accused involved in the rape.

Participating in the discussion, Goa Forward Party Legislator Vijai Sardesai said that one of the minister was calling police.

MGP MLA Sudin Dhavalikar sought to know which was the minister that was trying to influence the investigation.

To this, chief minister Pramod Sawant intervened asking Sardesai to name the minister on the floor of the House or withdraw his comments.

As Sardesai refused to withdraw his comments, Speaker Rajesh Patnekar expunged all the comments.

Sawant said that the police have acted swiftly by arresting all the accused.
