Old Goa: The Old Goa Police Station has launched an intensive drive to clear roadside blockages and remove unauthorised vendors along the Kadamba highway to ensure smooth traffic movement for the public. The operation, which began on November 13, continued through Friday and will remain in force over the weekend, officials said.
Police said the objective of the drive is to facilitate free and safe vehicular movement on the busy Merces–Banastarim stretch, which has been facing congestion due to hawkers occupying the roadside.
On November 13, five unauthorised hawkers were detained on the Kadamba plateau in Old Goa for allegedly obstructing traffic by selling chairs and fish along the roadside.
The crackdown continued on November 14, during which five more hawkers were held at Dhulpae, Corlim, for selling plastic chairs and other items on the road, causing disturbance to traffic.
“All unauthorised vendors and hawkers, except local vegetable sellers, are being booked along the Kadamba highway,” an officer said.
The detained individuals have been arrested under Section 34(iv) of the Indian Police Act for blocking and disturbing vehicular movement on the highway.
Police said the drive will be intensified over the weekend to ensure continued convenience to the general public.
