Panaji: As the Indian Meteorological Observatory (IMD) has issued Red Alert for Goa on Friday (tomorrow), the state government has announced two day long holiday for the schools up to standard eighth.
Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted extremely heavy rainfall over Goa on July 08 and very heavy rainfall on July 09 to July 10.
As per the press release by State Information and Publicity department, necessary instructions have been used to the Disaster Management Authority in the state to activate the field machinery for taking precautionary actions and to tackle any situation arising out of heavy rainfall.
“The general public, in view of the above are requested to take precautionary measures – Avoid staying near weak trees/structures or areas vulnerable for landslide/rock falls, not to drive into flooded areas. Avoid going to the areas that face water logging problems often; Take safety measures while dealing with electric power and avoid venturing into water bodies unless absolutely necessary,” the press note adds.
State Director of Education Shailesh Sinai Zingde on Thursday issued circular announcing two days holiday for the schools up to eighth standard.
“In view of the Red Alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department Goa Centre predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall and extremely heavy rainfall over the two districts and keeping in mind the safety of young children in elementary schools, it is decided by the competent authority to declare holiday on 8th and 9th July 2022 to the students from Std I to VIII in the state of Goa,” reads the circular.
“However, normal classes will be held for students of Standard IX to XII,” he added.
The state continued crippling the normal life due to rains. Several roads and bridges remained underwater while roof of an Anganwadi in Quepem taluka collapsed last night.
Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa said that the roof of Anganwadi caved in on Wednesday night due to rains. There are at least 30 students who are enrolled in this Anganwadi, he said.
D’Costa has provided alternative arrangement for the students to continue with the classes.
