Panaji: The people dependent on mining industry will gather outside a venue for upcoming Goods and Service Tax (GST) council meeting scheduled to be held on September 20 in Goa, a senior leader said.
Goa Mining People’s Front President Puti Gaonkar said that thousands of mining dependents will be assembling on Old Goa Highway, a road next to a starred hotel where the GST council meeting is happening, to present memorandum to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Seetharaman.
He aaid that mining dependents will walk to the venue with the memorandum.
The mining industry has come to a standstill since last year after Supreme court quashed 88 minining leases. The people dependent on this industry are depending intervention by the union government to troubleshoot the issue.
A group of ministers under the leadership of Union Home minister Amit Shah has been formed which is exploring the possibility of helping out mining industry in Goa.
Union Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi had said that the report prepared by GoM would be presented before Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting the various ways to resume mining industry in Goa.
Meanwhile, a senior police officer said that adequate security arrangements are in place near GST Council meeting to avoid any untoward incident. “The mining dependents will be stopped on the way,” he said.
