Panaji: Goa’s Deputy Speaker and BJP legislator Michael Lobo has reiterated the demand to install statue of Dr Jack Sequeira, state’s first leader of opposition, in the assembly complex to remember his work.
The demand for the statue of Sequeira which was raised by Goa Forward party was rejected by BJP earlier this year claiming that installing one statue will give rise to demand of having several more such installations.
Sequeira was the first leader of opposition and spearheaded the group which opposed the merger of Goa into Maharashtra during Historic opinion poll in the year 1967.
“We cannot forget the contribution of Dr Jack Sequeira to the Goa. If I am next to you as a deputy speaker or legislator, it is only because he saved Goa from being merged into Maharashtra during opinion poll,” Lobo told reporters.
“We will install Sequeira’s statue in the legislative assembly complex at Porvorim. It will be a fitting tribute to the man who was chiefly responsible for retaining Goa’s and every Goans’ identity,” he added.
Lobo who represents Calangute constituency in the assembly said that he would raise this issue on the floor of the House during assembly session. “Might be through resolution or any other means, we have to ensure that statue of Sequeira is installed in the assembly,” the legislator said.
