MGP wants disqualification of Shirodkar, Sopte, moves to HC

Panaji: MGP has filed a petition before Goa Bench of Bombay High Court seeking to disqualify two former Congress MLAs who had left their party and joined the Amit Shah led party.

Two MGP leaders Satyawan Palkar and Vikas Prabhu on Monday filed the petiton before Goa Bench of Bombay High Court in Panaji.

The petition is against former Congress MLAs Subhash Shirodkar and Dayanand Sopte, who had resigned last month to join BJP. Both the former MLAs are nominated as Chairman of State run Economic Development Corporation and Goa Tourism Development Corporation respectively.

The petitioners has pleaded before the High Court to quash and set aside the impunged order on October 16, 2018 whereby the Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly had accepted the resignation of both the MLAs.

The petitioners has also pleaded before the court to issue appropriate directions to the Election Commission of India to sent appropriate recommendations to the Government as well as the Law Commission of India seeking amendment to the Anti-defection law whereby the member of either the Parliament or the Legislative Assembly or councils resign from the membership without justifiable reasons should be disqualified from contesting fresh elections and/or accepting any public posts for a period of six years.

The petitioners has also sought orders from the court restraining Shirodkar and Sopte from contesting the Bye-election in Constituencies represented by them in the Elections held in February 2017 (Goa Assembly poll) as well as from occupying any other office of profit in the government till the term of the present assembly gets over.

They have pleaded that pending the current petition (filed before the High court), the respondents be restrained from occupying and functioning as the Chairman of EDC and GTDC as well as from accepting any renumeration from any of these corporations.

  1. Parrekar is unwell. The State’s functioning has come to a standstill. I fail to understand why the Governor is silent to the people’s voice and ask the CM to step aside and let someone of his choice take over. The governor should act at least now and show that she is not a puppet in the hands o the Center. She must show some spine and not act like a rubber stamp Governor.
    She should remember that there is a limit to people’s patience.
