Margao: Keeping their assurance given during the formation of “Margao Civic Alliance”, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai backed councilor Lyndon Pereira resigned as Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council on Friday.
Addressing a press conference, Sardesai said that his panel and the party is keeping “uttor” given to relinquish the post midway to make way for the next candidate.
Sardesai and Digambar Kamat panels have joined hands to form the MMC.
“Uttor is not just a word, it is a word to be kept,” the Fatorda MLA said, taking a dig at BJP CM Pramod Sawant and the saffron party for treating “Uttor” like any other word.
“In future, people will judge political leaders with their commitment towards the assurance given by them.”
Pereira had taken over as the Chairperson in May 2021 after they won the municipal election.
Sardesai said that Pereira took over the charge during height of covid-19 and he was welcomed by pandemic induced lockdown. “When the revenue collection was almost nil, the new Chairperson ensured that the civic body functions smoothly,” he said.
The GFP chief accused BJP of trying to topple Pereira during his tenure. But their attempt was unsuccessful.
Sardesai said that the vexed issue of Sonsodo Garbage Dump was handed over to the Goa State Waste Management Corporation. He pointed out that biomethane plant was also set up at this Portuguese era dump.
He said that Pereira collected Rs 10.50 crore revenue for the civic body. Sardesai said that the missing file syndrome has vanished since the time CCTV cameras were installed in the municipality offices.
