Man attacks woman with knife in Cortalim, Verna police registers offence

Verna: A 34-year-old woman was allegedly attacked with a knife in broad daylight at Vollant, Cortalim, leaving her seriously injured, while her father also sustained injuries during a rescue attempt.
According to a complaint lodged by a 66-year-old man, Gokuldas Shirodkar, a resident of Vollant, Cortalim, the incident occurred on Saturday morning at around 09.45 hrs on an internal public road in the locality. The complainant stated that his married daughter, Shital Palekar, aged 34 years, had stepped out to pluck flowers when the accused, Sushant Narshiv Shirodkar, aged about 47 years, a resident of Vollant, approached her.
The accused, who is related to the complainant as his nephew but reportedly not on cordial terms with the family, allegedly confronted the woman while under the influence of alcohol. Police said he began abusing her in obscene language and questioned her presence at her parental home despite being married and residing at Carambolim.
The situation soon turned violent as the accused allegedly attacked the woman with a knife, repeatedly striking her on the head and neck, causing serious injuries. Hearing her cries, the complainant rushed to intervene and attempted to rescue his daughter but sustained injuries in the process.
Both victims were later provided medical assistance. Based on the complaint, Verna police have registered a case of attempt to murder against the accused.
