Panaji, October 2024: In a significant rescue operation, five male tourists from Kerala were saved by Drishti Marine lifesavers off Calangute beach in the early hours of Friday.
The five men, aged between 25 and 30 years, entered the sea in an intoxicated state at around 6:20 AM. Shubham Kelaskar, a lifesaver stationed at Calangute beach, was informed about the intoxicated individuals stepping into the water.
Goa’s beaches are off-limits for swimming between 6 PM and 7 AM.
When he arrived at the scene, Shubham noticed that the tourists appeared intoxicated and were not heeding his repeated warnings. He relayed the information to his colleagues at the lifesaver tower and advised them to stay alert.
After the tourists waded deeper into the water, they were caught in a rip current about 30 meters from the shore. Noticing their distress, Shubham, along with fellow lifesavers Nakul Usapkar, Sujal Dhuri, Kartik Naik, and Rohit Hirnaik, rushed into the water and brought the tourists back to shore with the help of rescue tubes.
Once on the beach, the lifesavers checked their vitals, as per standard protocol, to confirm that the individuals were unharmed. They were subsequently handed over to their friends, who had accompanied them to the beach.
