Panaji: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Thursday raised concerns over fish meal pollution, hazardous waste, and encroachment by industrial units on Sociedade land in Cuncolim.

“The attention of the House is drawn to a grave and escalating civic and environmental crisis due to pollution in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate and its surrounding areas caused by untreated water released by fish meal plants. The Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) of these units are not functional, resulting in untreated discharge that poses threats to public health and contaminates water sources. There is fear and anxiety due to approvals for additional fish meal plants outside the industrial area,” the Cuncolim MLA said.

“Further, heaps of hazardous waste dumped at different locations in the industrial estate and nearby areas pose risks to life, safety, and security, particularly during the monsoon, as hazardous materials contaminate streams and water bodies. Although it was assured in the House that the hazardous waste would be removed by September 2025, no action has been taken,” he added.

“Additionally, there is concern over M/s Shirdi Steel Private Limited encroaching on Sociedade land in Cuncolim for its expansion. Despite a pending civil suit regarding lease and default of payment, the company is reportedly carrying out work illegally,” he said.
