Panaji: The first day of the three day long lockdown observed in Goa was peaceful with people staying indoor.

State government has imposed lockdown on July 17, 18 and 19 due to the rising cases of COVID-19 infection.

Essential services including industries were exempted from the lockdown.

Superintendent of Police (North) Utkrisht Prasoon said that there was voluntary compliance on the part of the people for the lockdown.

“The more stress was not on booking cases but convincing the people not to venture out during the lockdown,” he said.

Prasoon said that there was self compliance by the people though strong presence of police force was maintained across the state.

“There was no traffic movement except for those involved in essential services. The compliance was good,” he said.

State government has exempted the industries from lockdown due to which all the industrial estates were functional in the state.

“The industries functioned normally without any disturbance. But there was 30-50 per cent less workforce turn out due to unavailability of public transport,” said Damodar Kochkar, President, Goa State Industries Association (GSIA).

He said that the association will take up the issue with the state government to allow “at least some public transport services buses to ply during peak time carrying industrial workforce.”

Kochrekar said that those industries who have their own transport system had ferried the staff to the work.
