Life thrown out of gear, one death on Friday as monsoon hits the state

Panaji: One person died while life was thrown out of gear in Goa on Friday after incessant rains hit the coastal state for the consecutive third day. The state was given Red Alert by Indian Meteorological Observatory for Friday.

Senior Citizen Gajanan Padiyar died after getting drown in the water at Padi village of Quepem taluka in South Goa on Friday morning. State Social Welfare Minister Subhash Fal Desai said that the body of Padiyar was fished out of the flood waters by Fire and Emergency Services on Friday afternoon.

The road linking Canacona to Margao city in South Goa was under water during the entire day, disrupting the traffic movement on it.

Several low lying areas remained under water. The roof of a primary high school building at Chinchim village in South Goa was blown off due to winds on Thursday midnight.

Indian Meteorological Department said that the South West Monsoon was vigorous over the state of Goa on Friday. “Heavy to very heavy rainfall was witnessed at most places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places occurred over the state of Goa,” the IMD has said in a media statement issued here.

The IMD has predicted that in  continuation of previous forecasts, the enhanced rainfall activity is likely to be witnessed over Goa for next five days. “The  Winds gusting to around 50kmph very likely along with the rainfall spells,” the IMD has said.

“With reservoir and river water levels rising, precautions may please be taken at areas vulnerable for flooding and landslide,” the IMD has said.
