Margao: Goa Police on Sunday initiated inquiry after the video of a policeman hitting unknown bike-rider for violating Janata Curfew surfaced on social media.
The video was shot by a local resident near Margao’s Davorlim area when a police officer in plain clothes was seen hitting a passerby with lathi.
Country is observing Janata Curfew in order to curb spread of Coronavirus.
Superintendent of Police (South) Arvind Gawas said that the police officer has been removed from the particular duty and shifted to reserved unit, pending inquiry against him.
“We will inquire into the incident, but for now he has been shifted to reserved unit,” he said.
Social media was abuzz with different views on the action of a policemen. While some hailed it as an apt thing to ensure hundred percent implementation of Janata Curfew, many criticized the highhanded behaviour of police.
Goa Congress chief Girish Chodankar tweeted “The goondagiri of GoaPolice is exposed. This is humanly unacceptable. It is #JanataCurfew @goacm @DrPramodPSawant must explain and act. I have reported it to @spsouthgoa and IGP. Police without uniform and mask. Collapse of Administration in Goa @INCGoa strongly condemns this act.”
Later Chodankar issued a statement “Police responded quickly on complaint and said policemen is shifted from his duty and enquiries ordered. We thank police for prompt action.”

The person who was assaulted should give the same lathi on this police officer who violated the law in not wearing a mask and in civil clothes. Including the one who stood by as a mute spectator should be punished.
