Panaji: Goa police on Monday arrested two individuals for running an illegal recruitment agency and trafficking girls from India to Muscat.
Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Rahul Gupta told reporters in Panaji that the international human trafficking racket was busted after one of the girls returned from Muscat.
“The girl reached out to the police, informing them that she was sent illegally to Muscat with a promise of a job as a maid, where she was sexually abused and also made to starve,” he said.
Based on the girl’s statement, police arrested two persons — Sayyad Abdullah Shaikh and Mastan Khan — who were running an illegal overseas recruitment agency, Gupta said.
The SP mentioned that the girl had revealed there are eleven more girls from different parts of the country who are still stuck in Muscat.
The victim informed the police that they were sent by various illegal overseas recruitment agents operating in different states, he added.
Gupta said that following instructions from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and DGP Alok Kumar, Goa police have decided to launch an extensive drive to check the authenticity of various overseas recruitment agencies.
He further stated that there would be a crackdown on such agencies. Gupta has appealed to the public to come forward and lodge complaints against such agents.
