Margao: In what appears to reflect poorly on the organisational strength of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC), the scheduled public meeting of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge at Navelim has been cancelled.

Kharge was slated to address a gathering on May 30 at the Manohar Parrikar Stadium, Navelim, and preparations for the event had already begun.

While no official announcement has been made, party sources confirmed the cancellation. Efforts to contact GPCC President Amit Patkar went unanswered, as has often been the case.

According to sources, the primary reason for the cancellation is the party’s lack of confidence in mobilizing a significant crowd. Although some leaders have cited weather concerns as the reason, insiders admit the inability to generate turnout was the deciding factor.

Sources further revealed that in a recent meeting of Congress office bearers, most leaders refused to take on the responsibility of crowd mobilisation. Despite it being Kharge’s first public meeting in Goa, Patkar reportedly failed to inspire the team to act.

To avoid a potentially embarrassing situation, the party eventually decided to cancel the event. Congress Goa desk in-charge Manikrao Thakre had been in the state to oversee preparations for the meeting.
