Panaji: In a historic moment for Goa, doctors at State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) harvested organs from a deceased donor on Monday night at Goa Medical college (GMC) and hospital, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane informed via a tweet.
Rane also informed that the donated kidneys will be transplanted to the recipients as per sequential order in the SOTTO’s register.
“History was made at SOTTO Goa, @GoaGmc, as our doctors for the first time harvested organs from a deceased donor last night. This is the first-ever attempt made by GMC for Organ Donation & Transplantation. The donated kidneys shall be transplanted to two recipients as per the sequential order in the SOTTO registry,” Rane tweeted.
“Truly a proud moment for the people of the state of Goa,” he exclaimed.
The SOTTO was inaugurated by Vishwajit Rane in December 2019. “Atleast 22 people were registered for kidney transplant last year GMC has already been conducting living-donor kidney transplants. After the establishment of SOTTO, GMC is now equipped to retrieve and transplant kidneys from deceased donors as well,” nodal officer, SOTTO Dr Shivanand Bandekar had said earlier.
