Panaji: Goa government on Wednesday warned that all those who have been adviced home quarantine due to suspected coronavirus infection, and found roaming on the streets, would be jailed.

State chief minister Pramod Sawant told reporters that special teams led by Magistrates have been formed who would be on the streets scouting for such people who have been adviced to remain home quarantined.

“We have stamped all those who have been adviced to remain home quarantined. If we find anyone roaming outside on the street, they would be taken to the police lock ups or sent to Central jail for 14 days,” he said.

Sawant said that the state government has to take up these extreme steps to ensure that the coronavirus do not spread in the state.

“We don’t have a single positive case of coronavirus infection till now. All our efforts are to ensure that Goa remains coronavirus free state,” the chief minister said.

He said that the call given by Prime minister Narendra Modi to have 21 day lockdown has been received well in the state.

“There are certain apprehensions about the supply of essential commodities that is being addressed by government,” he said adding that the people have been asked to volunteer to provide essentials to the doorsteps.

“Those who are willing to volunteer would be screened for coronavirus infection. Once they are selected, they would be issued the passes. They can go around with that pass only within the specified jurisdiction,” he said.

Sawant said that if anyone is found misusing the pass given by the government, he would be severely punished.

Goa government has also decided to launch food and medicine helplines for those who are living alone or  in the need of it.

The volunteers or police will provide them the necessary items at their doorstep, once they call the helpline, he said.

The state government has also asked the Fair Price Shop owners to register themselves with Deputy Collector who will issue them passes to provide grocery and other essentials at the doorstep.

Sawant warned that if anyone is found overcharging for home delivery, he would be tken to task.
