Panaji: Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Wednesday said that the High Court verdict on the Ponda Assembly by-poll was “shocking.”

The Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court on Wednesday declared the notification by the Election Commission of India on the Ponda by-poll as “null and void,” thereby cancelling the voting process scheduled for April 9.

“The decision of the court is shocking. We are in touch with our central party leadership,” Sawant said.

The Chief Minister added that the BJP accepts the order given by the High Court and is waiting for the formal notification from the ECI. “We are yet to get the notification from the ECI,” he said.

He claimed that his party candidate, Ritesh Naik, would have certainly won the election with a margin of 3,500–4,000 votes.

Sawant said that although the election has been cancelled, the government will fulfil all the promises made to the people of the state during its campaign.
