Panaji: Goa government’s proposal to construct new Raj Bhavan building has met with an objection from State Governor Satya Pal Malik.
In his communication to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Malik has said that the proposal should be kept on hold till financial condition of the state improves.
Sawant, recently, had announced the plans to construct new Raj Bhavan, shifting the office of Governor from Portuguese-era building located at Dona Paula.
State Information and Publicity department, in a press release on Saturday, said that Governor has written a letter to the Chief Minister on July 27, 2020, wherein he has requested the CM to defer the proposal of a new Raj Bhavan till state’s finances improves.
“Governor believes that at the time when the state is battling COVID-19 and reeling under financial crisis, the idea to construct a new Raj Bhavan is irrational and imprudent,” the department has said.
“Governor feels that any new capital work would entail unnecessary additional financial burden on the state exchequer thereby exacerbating the economic distress of the state. Governor in his letter to CM has further clarified that his requirement for functioning as Governor is very limited and he does not require any new Raj Bhavan building per se,” the department has said.
The government has said that “as of now there is no proposal for construction of a new building for Raj Bhavan. The project would be taken up only when the finances of the state improves and that too within premises of Raj Bhavan only.
