Panaji: Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) is pinning its hope on early resumption of tourism industry to minimise its losses.
The State-run Special Purpose Vehicle has been operating 13 hotel properties, mostly in the coastal belt, catering to the tourists.
GTDC Managing Director Nikhil Desai said that the corporation has been running into “historic losses” since last two years due to COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are pinning our hopes on early resumption of tourism industry as last two years have been a wash out for us,” he said.
Desai said that few residencies (hotels) run by GTDC has been shut down during the pandemic situation while they have redeployed the staff to other assignments. The corporation has 13 residencies.
“At least during last lockdown, the state government had taken over some of our residencies as quarantine centres. But this time, there is absolutely no occupancy,” he said.
Desai stated that the corporation has been burdened with the financial losses as they have to take care of salaries of 400 –odd staff besides liabilities like pensions of the ex-employees.
He said that the exact quantum of losses faced during last fiscal would be quantified in next couple of months but certainly the losses are huge.
