Margao: Goa Forward Party President Vijai Sardesai on Tuesday accused State government of trying to convert Old Goa into a modern city at the cost of heritage and religious sentiments by including the areas into Greater Panaji Planning and Development Authority (GPPDA).

Sardesai told a press conference in Margao that the areas up to Corlim have been included in GPPDA, which makes them C1 zone allowing the buildings up to 30 metres. He said that the buildings which are taller than the heritage structures would come up at Old Goa.

He said that the state government wants to convert Old Goa into Dubai

Sardesai gave a deadline up to the feast day, December 3 for Town and Country Planning Department to announce that there is status quo on including these areas into the GPPDA.

The former TCP minister said that the GPPDA during their meeting four days back has decided to include these areas. Sardesai said that there was a pressure on him to include these areas into GPPDA during his tenure as TCP minister, which he withstood.

He also alleged that the proposed waste treatment plant at Banguinim was to serve the people in this to-be modern city of Old Goa.
