Panaji: Stating that the ban on single-use plastic has come into force in the State from today, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that government will impose fines on the violators of the law in near future.

He was speaking at the State level event held to celebrate birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Chowk Old Goa.

“We have banned single-use plastic in the State from today. We have started it with government offices, meetings and functions. But I want citizens to take the initiative and make this as mass movement,” he said.

“In near future, we will introduce fines against use of single use plastic items,” he stated.

Further, Chief Minister directed government officials to discontinue the practice of bursting fire crackers during Gandhi Jayanti celebrations.

He said that Mahatma Gandhi was a true environmentalist and bursting fire crackers is not in sync with good environment practices.
