Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has said that the new building for Raj Bhavan would be constructed shifting the seat of Governor from 16th century building located at Dona Paula near Panaji.
Sawant on Friday announced the decision to construct new Raj Bhavan building after the existing building where Raj Bhavan is located was declared as Heritage Building by Archeological Survey of India.
“The chief minister announced the decision to construct new premises for Raj Bhavan and suggested to carry on the procedures like identifying of land, its design, work of which could be tendered before April 2021,” the government spokesman said in a statement issued here.
Sawant informed this while reviewing the ongoing maintenance work of Raj Bhavan and its restoration at his residence Altinho Panaji today.
“ The Chief Minister said the existing centuries old building has been declared as heritage building by the Archaeological Survey of India. The Chief Minister stressed on to sustain the originality and uniqueness of the building of the existing building,” he added.
Participating in the discussion, State Chief Secretary Parimal Rai suggested to have sufficient land for the landing of three helicopters and also suggested to consider other aspects of the building.
Known as “Palacio de Cabo”, the existing Raj Bhavan is operating from a sprawling 88 acres of land located on a cape overlooking Arabian Sea.
The 16th century building was a seat of power even during Portuguese rule and residence of Governors that ruled the colony.
