Panaji: Goa’s Fisheries minister Nilkant Halarnkar on Monday said that the state’s economy could be majorly dependent on fishing, if younger generation takes interest in this sector.
Talking to reporters in Panaji, Halarnkar said that alike Mining industry, which was the backbone of the state’s economy, the fishing industry too can contribute in a major way for the exchequer.
“State’s economy can be majorly dependent on the fishing industry, if the young generation takes the interest in it,” he said.
Halarnkar said that the overexploitation of the fish resources could be a problem in the future. “That is why, we should adopt latest technologies to have better harvest,” he said.
The minister appealed Goan youth who are highly qualified like that of IIT-educated to show their interest in this sector.
