Panaji: Goa Swimming Association on Wednesday terminated contract of their coach Surajit Ganguly after his video of molesting a girl went viral while union sports ministry has asked for ban on his employment in any of the swimming associations.
Association’s Chairman Digambar Kamat said that the action was initiated against the coach after the video went viral, though there is no formal complaint lodged against him by anyone.
“What we saw in the video was condemnable. That is why we immediately wrote to Sports Authority of Goa informing about termination of his services,” Kamat said.
Ganguly was attached to Mapusa facility of SAG and has been training several swimmers.
In the year 2017, Goa Legislative Assembly had even moved a congratulatory motion congratulating him along with others for bringing pride and glory to swimming and diving sports and to the state of Goa.
Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju took on to twitter to announce about termination of the coach. He tweeted “I have taken strong view of the incident. The Goa Swimming Association has terminated the contract of coach Surajit Ganguly. I am asking the Swimming Federation of India to ensure that this coach is not employed anywhere in India. This applies to all Federations and disciplines.”
The action was taken against the coach after his picture of allegedly molesting the girl went viral on a twitter.
Soon after it, Rijiju had responded through tweet. “A stringent action will be taken through Sports Authority. Firstly, it’s heinous crime of serious nature so I will urge the police to take stringent penal action against the coach urgently.”
