Panaji: Minutes before his induction in Dr Pramod Sawant led cabinet, Speaker of Goa Assembly Ramesh Tawadkar resigned from the post.

The Speaker submitted his resignation to Legislature Secretary Namrata Ulman as Deputy Speaker Joshua De Souza is currently out of the state on a private visit.

The 57-year-old tribal leader later headed to Raj Bhavan where he would be inducted in Sawant-led cabinet along with former chief minister and BJP MLA Digambar Kamat.

“I wanted to complete my five years as the Speaker but the party (BJP) wanted me to step down and work for the organisation. I was asked to take the ministerial berth,” Tawadkar told PTI.

He said that he kept on resisting for some time before giving up to the wishes of the party.

Tawadkar was elected as the Speaker of Legislative Assembly in March, 2022, soon after BJP scored victory in the Goa polls.

“I am happy that during my role as a Speaker, I have managed to keep the respect of the chair and neutrality. I have shown that the Speaker can do lot many things for the society,” he said, referring to his initiative of “Shram Dham” where poor and needy are given housing free of cost.

Tawadkar said that he had dedicated his time for the people being on the post of the Speaker.
