Panaji: Goa police have initiated a probe after preliminary autopsy conducted on the body of a 20-year-old student who died in the hostel room of BITS-Pillani campus in South Goa, revealed presence of drugs.
While senior police officers confirmed that the autopsy report has found traces of drugs in the body of Rishi Nair, who was found dead in his hostel room, last Thursday, Chief minister Pramod Sawant said that the police are investigating the matter.
“Police are investigating the matter,” Sawant reacted speaking to the reporters in Panaji on Friday when asked about the prevalence of drugs in the educational institutions.
BITS-Pillani campus is situated near Vasco town in South Goa.
Superintendent of Police (South) Tikam Singh Verma told reporters in Margao town on Friday that the preliminary report has suggested that there was presence of drugs in the body of the student.
Verma said that the investigation is going on in the matter.
He said that the strict vigilance is being maintained around the educational institutions, including BITS Pillani about possible usage of drugs, alcohol or any banned substance in the campus.
He said that of the last five deaths that were reported at BITS Pillani campus since December 2024, this is the first one where the traces of drugs are found.
A delegation of AAP leaders led by its MLA Cruz Silva on Friday met Verma in Margao raising concern about the sale of drugs in the educational institutions.
“The students know where the drugs are found. They are easily available. Why are police not acting against these paddlers,” Silva questioned.
In Panaji, AAP Goa President Amit Palekar said that the crucial question is how did the drugs reach the campuses.
“This is a failure of Goa police, law and order and the chief minister himself. CM should start taking it seriously,” he said.
