Goa Police have arrested three main suppliers of drugs: CM

Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday said that three major drug peddlers have been arrested by State police, which will severely affect the peddling in the state.

Without naming the three dealers, Sawant told reporters in Panaji that one drug peddler was arrested on Tuesday while two were arrested on Wednesday by Anti Narcotic Cell of Goa Police under Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

He said that these three people were main suppliers of the drugs in the state.

The chief minister said that the State police have began a massive crackdown on the drug trade in the state.

Sawant was talking to reporters after chairing a high level meeting with the Goa Police department officials.

The chief minister said that government wants to pass a “strict message to the tourists that our state is not for any drugs (will not entertain drugs consumption).”

Sawant said that the Night Clubs and other spots where late night parties happen, are also under radar of State Police.

He said that the owners of the premises will also be booked, if drugs is found to be consumed in his premises.

Referring to Curlies Restaurant at Anjuna where tik-tok star Sonali Phogat was allegedly given drugs, Sawant said that the premises of the restaurant are sealed by the state authorities.

Responding to a question on increase in crimes like murders in the state, Sawant said from the year 2019 till date, the crime rate is low while crime detection rate is high.

He said that during last two years, due to COVID-19 pandemic, many people had migrated outside the state, who are returning back because of the economic activity in the state. Sawant said that many people who are from outside the state were involved in the crime.

Talking about the cases of rape, Sawant said that 95 per cent of these are cases involve accused who is known to the victim or the minors.

The chief minister said that the Lady Police Constables are assigned the task of meeting the adolescent population in their area and educate them on how to safeguard themselves from this crime.
