Panaji: Goa Cyber Crime police arrested a 19-year-old man in Punjab in connection with the digital arrest scam wherein he had cheated the victim for Rs 18 lakhs in the coastal state.
Superintendent of Police (CyberCrime, Goa) said that Surinder Kumar (19) from Prem Vihar Colony, Jassian Road, Ludhiana, Punjab was arrested and brought to Goa on Sunday.
The accused had cheated a Goa resident by impersonating himself as Central Bureau of Investigation Officer and extorted Rs 18 lakhs under the pretext of Cyber Arrest.
The formal complaint was lodged with police earlier this month in which the victim had told the investigating officer that the accused on June 03, 2025 impersonated officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and contacted the victim through WhatsApp. “The accused falsely claimed that the victim’s bank account and personal details were linked to a money laundering case, and under this false pretext, coerced the victim into transferring Rs 18 lakhs to avoid legal consequences,” Gupta said.
The SP said that acting swiftly, the Cyber Crime Police Station, Goa, initiated technical surveillance and financial trail analysis, which led to the identification and tracking of the accused’s location in Punjab.
A cyber crime police team proceeded to Ludhiana, Punjab and arrested the accused. He was brought to Goa and arrested for the crime under different sections of BNS and section 66-D of the Information Technology Act.
The accused has been remanded to four (04) days of police custody by the local court, he said.
