Goa panchayats to go for polls on Aug 10

Panaji: Goa State Election Commission on Saturday announced that the elections for 186 pancayats would be held on August 10.

State Election Commissioner W V Ramanamurthy told reporters in Panaji that the election for 186 panchayats would be held on August 10, while counting of votes would be on August 12.

He said that the Code of Conduct comes into force in the state from Saturday onwards, while it will not impact conduct of the ongoing Session of State LegislativeAssembly.

The Commissioner, howver, said that the State Election Commission will keep watch on the assurances given on the floor of the House related to those panchayats which are going for the polls.

He said that the municipal areas are excluded from the Code.

In order to ensure smooth conduct of the polls, the commission has appointed Collectors as District Returning Officers while there will be 12 General observers and 21 expenditure observers.

There will be 10,700 polling staff on duty and each candidate has expenditure limit of Rs 40,000, he said adding that the votes would be polled through ballots.

Spread across 12 talukas, there are 186 panchayats and 1528 wards.

In all  8,27,099 voters would be eligible to exercise their franchise on 1566 polling booths.

Ramanamurthy said that the nominations will be held from July 18 till July 25 while July 26 will be date of scrutiny.

The candidates can withdraw their candidature on July 27, he said. The election will be held on August 10 between 8 am to 5 pm.
