Panaji: Aam Admi Party Goa President Amit Palekar on Wednesday said that the attempt to cancel his bail by the Crime Branch clearly indicates that Goa government is afraid of its political opponents.

Addressing a press conference in Panaji, Palekar said that the state government has been misusing its police and prosecution machinery to target the opposition, which is exposing their failures.

Goa Bench of Bombay High Court had overruled the order of Additional District Judge Apurva Nagvekar which has cancelled the bail granted to him in connection with an accident case.

Palekar was arrested by Crime Branch earlier last year accusing him of hatching a conspiracy of introducing a fake driver in a car accident involving his acquaintance. Three people were killed in the accident at Banastarim bridge, that was reported in August 2023.
The District Court had cancelled his bail accusing him of travelling to countries like Thailand and Hong Kong besides France, after the court allowed him to travel only to France.
Palekar said that he has always been following the conditions imposed during granting of the bail. He said that he went to four different countries, but only after obtaining necessary permission from the court.

The AAP leader said that the Crime Branch tried to get his bail cancelled, based on false grounds. “The Crime Branch has failed to chargesheet main accused in the accident case but are busy targeting me because I have been exposing the faults of the government,” he said.

Palekar said that it was a political conspiracy and the entire attempt indicates that the state government is afraid of its political opponents.

He pointed out that recently he had exposed the extortion racket in the beach belt and even had filed a police complaint against Sunburn, an EDM festival.
Palekar said that when his bail was cancelled by District court on Monday, the police reached his place within twenty minutes to arrest him.

“Those who are speaking against the corruption are being targeted,” he said.
