Panaji: As per the preliminary estimates, the loss suffered by various farmers in the state to their crops and trees due to recent cyclonic winds is estimated to be around Rs three crore, Goa’s Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar said.
Kavlekar, who also holds Agriculture portfolio, said that all the twelve Zonal Agricultural Officers (ZAOs) in the state have also been asked to conduct detail estimates of the losses by meeting the farmers and visiting the cyclone affected areas.
The coastal state was hit with the cyclonic winds on Saturday and Sunday due to which several trees had fallen down. Two people had lost their lives.
Kavlekar said that the preliminary estimate prepared by the ZAOs and submitted to the government, claims the loses to be Rs three crore.
“We are waiting for the final estimates from the ZAOs, which would be submitted within next three days,” he said.
Kavlekar said that the damage was also caused to the paddy crop, which was harvested and kept in the fields. Several trees were also uprooted due to the cyclonic wind.
He said that many of the farmers had moved their harvested crop to safer places but there were some who could not shift it.
Kavlekar said that he has already discussed the issue of financial compensation to the farmers with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
He said that all the farmers, who have suffered the losses, would be compensated although many of them do not have ‘krishi card,’ which is mandatory for such claims.
“Even those farmers who do not have krishi card will be compensated. Government had provided similar financial compensation to the farmers last year when their crops was destroyed due to incessant rains,” he added.
