Panaji: Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant on Monday said that the State government is contemplating the possibility of getting documents related to forts and history of the coastal state from Portuguese government.
Addressing a function held to commemorate the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the ruins of Betul Fort in South Goa, Sawant said that Portuguese government is in possession of some of the important historical documents, which are required for the researchers and the students.
“The Archives and Archeology department of Goa government will contact the Union External Affairs Ministry to get back all the documents which are currently in possession of Portugal,” he said adding that these documents are related to the Forts and important historical events in the coastal state.
Sawant said that access to these documents will help to know the “exact information of all events that happened in the past.”
The chief minister said that many have tried to erase the historical fact that Shivaji Maharaj ruled Goa. He said that the 450-year-long rule of Portugal on Goa was on selected talukas. “Portuguese did not rule entire Goa for the 450 years,” he said.
Sawant said that Hindu culture remained intact due to Shivaji Maharaj.
