Panaji: Against the backdrop of prevailing circumstances in the State, the Goa Government has authorised both District Collectors to exercise preventive detention powers under the National Security Act (NSA) for a period of three months.

The order, issued on Thursday by Under Secretary (Home) Manthan Manoj Naik, authorises the two District Magistrates in the State to exercise preventive detention powers under the NSA for three months, citing the prevailing circumstances in Goa.

The notification reads: The Government of Goa, having regard to the circumstances prevailing in North Goa and South Goa Districts, is satisfied that it is necessary to do so. Therefore, during a period of three months from the date of commencement of this order, the District Magistrates of North Goa and South Goa may exercise powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 3 of the said Act within the local limits of their jurisdiction.

The order comes in the wake of the recent attack on social activist Rama Kankonkar by seven individuals, all of whom were habitual offenders. Concerns have also been raised over the rising gang fights in the State.
