Goa faces flood like situation on Tuesday, bridges, roads submerged

Panaji: Goa on Tuesday was hit by intense rainfall with several bridges, roads and low lying areas submerging under water.

Total loss to the property is yet to be estimated as the coastal state continued receiving rains on Tuesday. The rains had started lashing the state on Monday, which continued during Tuesday.

Indian Meteorological Department has issued warning of heavy rains in the state for another five days.

“South West Monsoon was vigorous over the state of Goa. Very Heavy rainfall occurred at most places with extremely heavy rainfull occurred at isolated places over the state of Goa,” IMD has said in a media statement released on Tuesday evening.

The Department has said that, there is likely to have enhanced rainfall activity over North and South Goa in coming five days.

Fishermen are advised not to venture along and off South Maharashtra-Goa-Karnataka coasts for 5 days from 5th July 2022. The warnings are issued based on the latest observations and numerical weather prediction model guidance, the IMD has said.

 Several roads and bridges were submerged especially in Quepem, Sanguem, Salcette and Sattari taluka on Tuesday. Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas was seen walking in the knee deep water to reach to the submerged areas.

Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa said that he has been receiving several distress calls since Tuesday morning. “There are many people who are stranded. I have been personally monitoring the operation to provide them help,” he said.

National Students Union of India and Goa Forward Party has demanded that State government should give holidays to schools till July 09. NSUI Goa tweeted “@NSUIGoa demands closure of schools and colleges due to very heavy rainfall and Orange alert by IMD till Saturday 9th July 2022 for the safety of the students. @goacm @DrPramodPSawant should immediately close all educational institutes due to high alert.”

Goa Forward Party students’ wing chief Uddesh Bhiku Naik Dessai tweeted “Appeal to CM @DrPramodPSawant to order closure of schools and colleges in the interest of student community and their parents till 9th July in view of orange alert issued by IMD.”
