Panaji: Goa cabinet on Wednesday waived off interest of Rs 3.20 crore to 500 Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Classes (OBC) beneficiaries.
Talking to reporters, chief minister Pramod Sawant said that around 500 people had procured a loan ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 from state run SC-OBC Finance Corporation, somewhere 25 to 30 years back.
He said that since this loan was not recovered, the cases against the beneficiaries were pending before the Revenue officers.
The total amount of interest from these loans had touched Rs 3.20 crore over the years and the beneficiaries were forced to attend the cases before the Revenue officers.
“These beneficiaries have been approaching me since last two years with the request to waive off the interest,” he said.
Sawant said that the state cabinet on Wednesday resolved to waive off the interest, closing the cases against them.
He stated that the beneficiaries will have to pay the actual loan amount that they had procured 25-30 years back.
