Betim, 14th July, 2025 – Goa today marked a significant step forward in its water transport journey with the commissioning of two state-of-the-art RoRo ferry boats, Gangotri and Dwarka, on the Chodan–Ribandar route. The initiative is part of the government’s continued efforts to modernize public transport and enhance everyday connectivity for citizens.

Designed and built by Vijay Marine Shipyards, both ferries reflect the growing capabilities of Goa’s shipbuilding sector and the government’s focus on self-reliance through Make in India. Completed in just one and a half years, the project showcases the state’s ability to deliver high-impact infrastructure efficiently and with precision. On this occasion, the two newly built ferries were formally handed over for public service. Built at a cost of ₹25 crore, the ferries represent a major investment in Goa’s transportation future.

This achievement also echoes the national vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose emphasis on world-class infrastructure, coastal connectivity, and Atmanirbhar Bharat has inspired Goa and other states to set new benchmarks in public service delivery. The RoRo ferry project is a living example of Bharat moving ahead with speed, innovation, and inclusive development.

Each RoRo ferry can accommodate up to 100 passengers, 15 to 16 four-wheelers, and 30 to 40 two-wheelers, significantly easing the load on traditional ferry services. With a running speed of 10 knots—twice that of conventional ferries—the new vessels ensure faster travel and reduced waiting time for commuters. The ferries will operate every day from 7 AM to 9 PM.

The service remains highly accessible. Passengers and two-wheeler riders can travel free of cost, while only ₹30 will be charged for four-wheelers. This provides affordable, efficient, and eco-friendly travel across the river for daily commuters, traders, and tourists alike.

Equipped with cutting-edge propulsion systems and thrusters imported from the Netherlands, the ferries ensure smoother navigation, better safety, and minimal service disruption. Professionally trained crew and modern onboard systems further guarantee reliable performance and an enhanced user experience.

One of the project’s highlights is its self-sustaining model. All aspects—construction, staffing, daily operations, and maintenance—are handled by the contractor, ensuring zero financial burden on the state exchequer while delivering world-class service.

Environmentally, too, the ferries are a step forward. With lower emissions, reduced smoke, and lesser fuel consumption, they align with Goa’s larger goal of promoting sustainable mobility.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that these ferries are not just a new mode of transport—they are a new promise. A promise of speed, safety, sustainability, and self-reliance. Inspired by the dynamic vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Goa is moving ahead on the path of modern infrastructure and Atmanirbharta. These RoRo ferries, proudly made in Goa, reflect the Prime Minister’s mission of delivering last-mile connectivity with world-class standards.

This milestone will not only ease river crossings for thousands of Goans every day but also set the tone for future-ready, people-first infrastructure across the state. It stands as a symbol of Goa’s resolve to lead with innovation and deliver public good at scale.

The event was attended by Union Minister Shripad Naik, MP Sadanand Tanavde, River Navigation Minister Subash Faldesai, Mayem MLA, Secretary Cheshta Yadav, and other dignitaries.
