Panaji: With around 20 per cent of the women in the State facing issue of infertility, State Health Department on Tuesday announced to begin the treatment for it in Goa Medical College and Hospital.
The State government will tie up with renowned infertility treatment specialist Dr Nandita Palshetkar and Federation of Obstertrics and Gynaecological Society of India (FOGSI) to start the treatment in its gynaecology department.
“There is 20 per cent rate of infertility amongst the women, out of which about half of them may need higher modality of treatment which is very expensive,” State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane told reporters addressing a press conference.
He said that several women from Goa have to go outstation to get infertility treatment which is expensive, and is costing them between Rs five lakh to Rs nine lakh.
Rane said that within a month, GMCH will have Intrauterin Insemination (IUI) facility to begin with while in next six months, the In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) will be introduced at the State run medical facility.
The minister said that the State government is in the process of building mother and child block for GMCH, which would be integrated with the department of gynaecology.
He said that the State government is working on providing all the infrastructure that is required to have IUI facility in the GMC as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) guidelines.
“ Dr Nandita Palshetkar has agreed to assist GMCH and she will give free service and hand hold us till we set up the facility,” he said adding that the State government will have formal tie up with Palshetkar.
