Panaji: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Thursday condemned the attack on activist Rama Kankonkar, stating that Goa is witnessing a disturbing trend of ‘goondagiri’ by assailants allegedly protected by police. He questioned Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on whether Goa is safe.

After the attack, Alemao visited Kankonkar, who was receiving treatment at Goa Medical College.

“I strongly condemn the attack on activist Rama Kankonkar. The perpetrators of this cowardly act must be apprehended and brought to justice. Goa is witnessing a disturbing trend of ‘goondagiri’ by assailants protected by police. Individuals who speak out against wrongdoing are being targeted. We cannot tolerate such incidents that silence whistle-blowers and undermine the voice of dissent,” Alemao said.

He added, “The Home Ministry and intelligence agencies have failed miserably. The earlier attack on Rama Kankonkar outside the court, followed by police inaction, clearly indicates that law enforcement is shielding the perpetrators. This raises serious concerns about the collapse of law and order in the state.”

Alemao further warned, “Multiple times we have said that there is no fear of law among miscreants, as some crimes are taking place with police support. Chief Minister should clarify whether the people of the state are safe or not. Such criminal incidents will create fear among the public.”

“Eyewitnesses claim the assailants were armed, which deterred them from intervening to rescue Rama Kankonkar. Goa has turned into Gundaraj. This should be stopped,” Alemao added.
