Mapusa: Former Sarpanch of the Arpora–Nagoa panchayat, Roshan Redkar, who is booked by Goa Police in connection with the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub fire incident at Arpora that killed 25 people, surrendered before a local court on Thursday.
Redkar surrendered before the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Mapusa, on Thursday after his anticipatory bail application was dismissed by the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court on January 21.
The accused was booked by Anjuna Police along with other accused, including Panchayat Secretary Raghuvir Bagkar, for granting a licence to the controversial premises.
The then sarpanch had moved an anticipatory bail application before the Additional District Court in Mapusa, which was rejected. He later appealed before the High Court against the district court order, which was also dismissed.
Redkar has been booked under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), Section 125 (endangering human lives), and Section 287 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter).
The Directorate of Panchayats had already disqualified Redkar from the post of sarpanch after he was booked by Goa Police.
Police have also arrested Bagkar, the panchayat secretary, who is accused of colluding with the sarpanch to provide licences for the controversial club.
Goa Police have arrested nine people, including Redkar, after 25 people lost their lives in the deadly fire at the nightclub on December 6 in Arpora.
