Panaji: Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte on Thursday said that every crime in the coastal state should not be linked to the tourism industry.

Talking to reporters in Panaji, Khaunte said that the state government has serious concerns about the drug trade in the state and action is initiated to weed it out.

The tourism minister said that the incident like death of Sonali Phogat should not be linked to the tourism industry and its prospects.

The 42-year-old Haryana based politician had died in Goa in the last week of August. Police have arrested five people in connection with the case.

“We have to understand one thing.  Police department is investigating the death of Sonali Phogat. Let the investigation reveal the truth behind her death,” he said.

Khaunte said that  every time whenever anything  happens in Goa, we are linking it to the tourism industry. “Drugs is a serious concern and the state government is strictly working against it,” he said adding that “we cannot connect everything to tourism.”

Khaunte said that the Tourism is a backbone of the state. “We want responsible tourists to come in the state and enjoy. We want them to come and enjoy in the state but act responsibly,” he added.

Khaunte said that the state government is working to ensure that the tourism moves in a right direction. “ Let us not make buzz out of unnecessary things,” he commented.
